South Pacific plastic debris field "larger than Texas" reported 7/31/17
A 2017 research expedition led by Captain Charles Moore uncovered a large amount of plastic in a remote area off the coasts of Chile and Easter Island while sailing aboard the ORV Alguita. 1

In 1988, Moore discovered the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" in the North Pacific. 3
